  Type species:

   Syngnathus fasciatus Gray, 1832 by subsequent designation, see Whitley, G.P. 1948. New sharks and fishes from Western Australia. Part 4. The Australian Zoologist 11(3): 259-276 figs 1-7 pls 24-25 [268] (type species Syngnathus fasciatus Gray, 1830 a junior homonym of Syngnathus fasciatus Risso, 1810) (= Syngnathus haematopterus Bleeker, 1851. Jordan & Evermann (1896) and Jordan (1919) give type as C. albirostris Heckel, but that species is apparently not available.).
