Species Coelorinchus parallelus (Günther, 1877)
Spiny Whiptail, Spiny Grenadier
- Macrurus parallelus Günther, A. 1877. Preliminary notes on new fishes collected in Japan during the expedition of H.M.S. Challenger. Annals and Magazine of Natural History 4 20(56): 433-446 [439].
Type data:
Syntype(s) BMNH 1887.12.7.65-68 (4 specimens), off Inoshima, Japan; BMNH 1887.12.7.69 (possible syntype), off Inoshima, Japan; MNHP 1890-0125 (ex BMNH), off Inoshima, Japan; NMI 114.1899, off Inoshima, Japan
Comment: BMNH 1887.12.7.59 from New Zealand and BMNH 1887.12.7.60-62, from the Kermadec Islands are sometimes listed as syntypes, but Günther, 1877 only mentions Inoshima; Wheeler & O'Riordan 1969 listed these specimens as non-types.

Miscellaneous Literature Names
- Caelorinchus parallelus (Günther, 1877) [misspelling of generic name. This genus has been incorrectly spelled Caelorinchus by many authors following Eschmeyer (1990) and Sazonov and Iwamoto (1992), however the previous spelling Coelorinchus is now considered to be the correct one]. —

Introduction
Iwamoto (1990) suggests that the southern limit of this species in the western Pacific is probably the Philippines. Records of this species from Australia are uncertain and may be misidentifications of C. kermadecus (see Iwamoto 1990).
