- Cephalopholis argus Bloch, M.E. & Schneider, J.G. 1801. Systema Ichthyologiae Iconibus ex Illustratum. Berlin 584 pp. 110 pls. [311, pl. 61] [authorship sometimes attributed solely to Schneider, but it is not clear from the original text whether only some or all of the description is from Schneider; derivation is probably from the Greek Argos, a hundred eyed giant, relating to the numerous eye-like spots on the body].
