Introduction

Members of the Centrolophidae are found throughout the world in tropical and temperate marine environments. Currently, seven genera and about 28 species are recognised (Nelson 2006), with all genera and 14 species recorded from Australia.

Centrolophids are pelagic in oceanic environments, some being associated with seamounts. Some species undergo considerable morphological change with growth. Many species are important commercial fishes in Australia, particularly the blue-eye trevalla, Hyperoglyphe antarctica. Centrolophids reach a large size, with the maximum size exceeding 1.4 m.

The family has not been studied thoroughly in Australia and is in need of revision. A number of Australian species are discussed in McDowall (1979, 1982, 1994, 2001) and Haedrich (1967). McDowall (1994) also provided a key to genera. Bolch et al. (1994) studied relationships of Australian genera and species based on genetic work and suggested that Psenopsis was polyphyletic. Doiuchi et al. (2003) presented evidence showing that Psenopsis does not belong with this group, but Nelson (2006) retained Psenopsis in Centrolophidae.
