Suborder STROMATEOIDEI

Compiler and date details

24 September 2013 - Douglass F. Hoese

20 December 2006 - Douglass F. Hoese

Introduction

This suborder includes six families of marine species commonly found on the continental shelf or slope (Nelson 2006); five families are represented in Australian waters. Little work has been done on relationships, but Haedrich (1967) presented a classification, Johnson & Fritzsche (1989) discussed possible relationships and Doiuchi et al. (2003) presented a cladistic analysis of the group, questioning monophyly of some families. However Doiuchi & Nakabo (2006) subsequently found molecular and morphological support for monophyly of existing families. Miya et al. (2013) considered the group paraphyletic and included it in a larger group of pelagic species, the Pelagia, which includes the Scombroidei, some Percoidei families, some Trachinoidei families and the Scombrolabracidae.
