Notes and illustrations of Queensland fishes, No. 3. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 7(4): 241–245 [245]; illustration of C. axiologus holotype is that of C. cinctus figured on pl. 14 (fig. 1); the derivation appears to be from the Greek axios = of like value + logos = word and is a noun in apposition].

Introduction

The species has long been known in Australia as Canthigaster coronata. Randall et al. (2008) split the species into three species; C. coronata from the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Island; C. cyanospilota from the Indian Ocean and C. axiologus.

Ningaloo Reef (22°S), to Monte Bello Islands (20°25'S), WA and One Tree Island, QLD (23°30'S) to Montague Island, NSW (36°16'S), possibly north to Cairns (16°42'S) on the east coast; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
