Introduction

Chiasmodontids, or swallowers, occur worldwide in tropical, subtropical and temperate oceanic environments. Four genera and about 15 species were recognised by Nelson (2006), but since that time 18 additional species have been described, bringing the total to between 30 and 32. The Australian fauna is represented by all the four genera and seven named species.

Chiasmodontids are meso- and bathypelagic in depths normally below 800 m. Only a few collections are available for these depths in Australian waters and it is likely that other species will be recorded. Maximum size is 26 cm.

Dysalotus and Kali were revised by (Johnson & Cohen 1974). A regional account for South African waters (Johnson & Keene 1986) included three genera and nine species. Melo (2008) revised Kali. Melo (2009) revised Chiasmodon. Melo (2010) revised Pseudoscopelus. Prokofiev & Kukev (2006) and Prokofiev (2008, 2011) have also studied the group, disagreeing in some cases with the work of Melo. Some Australian material has not been reported on and additional species may be present in Australia.
