Introduction

Widely misidentified as B. vulpinus by earlier workers, a species restricted to the west and southern coasts of Australia, and also treated as a junior synonym of B. oxycephalus, a species restricted to the northwest Pacific (see Gomon 2006).

Off Noosa Heads, QLD (26°32'S, 153°28'E) to Port Phillip Bay, VIC (38°08'S, 144°43'E), and seamounts and rises in the Tasman Sea, including Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island; temperate, south Pacific (New Zealand, Kermadec Islands, Rapa, Easter Island).
