Introduction
Previously considered to be a wide ranging Indo-west Pacific species however Gomon (2006) described the western Pacific form as a new species, Bodianus dictynna, with B. diana now restricted to the Indian Ocean (see Randall & Victor 2013). Current distribution of both species on the northwest coast of Australia is unclear since available records are visual observations of young individuals made prior to the distinction of the two species (Gomon, 2006).

Only Australian records are from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and possibly Christmas Island, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea and offshore reefs and Dampier Archipelago in WA (see Introduction); tropical, Indian Ocean.
