Holotype ZSI F.13437 (Depth 128 fathoms), Bay of Bengal [15°04'07"N, 80°25'07"E]. - Bembrops aethalea McKay, R.J. 1971. Two new genera and five new species of percophidid fishes (Pisces : Percophididae) from Western Australia. Journal of the Royal Society of Western Australia 54(2): 40-46 figs 1-5 [42, fig. 2] [Thompson, B.A. & Suttkus, R.D. 2002. A revision of Indo-Pacific Bembrops, family Percophidae (suborder Trachinoidei). Marine and Freshwater Research 53: 283-295 suggested, based on examination of paratypes, that the species may be a synonym of B. caudimacula].
