Introduction
Springer & Smith-Vaniz (1968) recognised the Pacific form as Atrosalarias fuscus holomelas. Hastings & Springer (2009) elevated the subspecies to species. The type locality of Salarias phaiosoma is close to areas where both species occur and no type specimen exists. We follow Springer & Smith-Vaniz (1968) and Smith-Vaniz & Springer (1971) in treating it as a synonym of Atrosalarias fuscus.
