Introduction
This suborder contains six families of small fishes, normally found in inshore waters, particularly around reef environments (Nelson (1994). Three of the families occur in Australia. Gosline (1968) reviewed the classification of the group and Springer (1993) further characterised the group. Phylogenetic information on the Blennioidei, based on molecular studies, is provided by Stepien et al. (1993, 1997).
