Introduction
The Ariommatidae are a small family currently, with one genus and about seven species (Nelson 2006). Few specimens have been collected from Australian waters, but two species from the single genus have been recorded.
Ariommatids occur worldwide, except for the eastern Pacific, in tropical and subtropical regions. They are pelagic and are found in deep water adjacent to land masses over the continental shelf and slope. Maximum size is 80 cm, but most are smaller.
Ariommatid species are dealt with in Haedrich (1967), Haedrich (1986), Horn (1972) and Piotrovskij (1987).
