Species Halichoeres marginatus Rüppell, 1835

Dusky Wrasse, Dusky-wrasse, Speckled Rainbowfish

Introduction

Kuiter (2002) reserved the name H. marginatus for the Red Sea (type location) populations of this species and identified Indo-Pacific populations as H. lamarii (Valenciennes 1839), with two sub-species; H. lamarii lamarii for the western Indian Ocean population, and H. lamarii annularis for the Indo-west Pacific population. Kuiter (2010) treated both sub-species as valid species, placed into the genus Platyglossus. Randall & Parenti (2011) retained the name H. marginatus for the widely distributed species, but suggested further work was needed to resolve the species.
