Broome, WA (17°58'S) to Lady Musgrave Island, QLD (23º55´S), also Rowley Shoals (17º30'S) and Scott Reef (14º05'S), WA, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12º15'S, 123º02'E), and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean; tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific; frequently misidentified as Epinephelus summana.
