Introduction
The species has generally been treated as Conger wilsoni after Kanazawa (1958). Böhlke & Smith (2002) and Smith (2008) regarded the name of an uncertain status (incertae sedis) belonging to the Muraenidae. The next available name according to Castle (1964) would be Conger labiatus Castelnau 1879. However, Smith & Stewart (2015) considered Conger monganius as the oldest name that unequivocally refers to this species.
