Syntype(s) AM I.19302-001, King George Sound, WA; SMNS 2541 (a 102.5 mm specimen regarded as holotype by Gon, O. 1988. Redescription of the holotypes of Vincentia conspersa (Klunzinger, 1872) and Apogon punctatus Klunzinger, 1879 (Pisces, Apogonidae. Record of the South Australian Museum 14(1): 7–15, but it is not clear that he saw all material), King George Sound, WA.
