Introduction
In the original description no type specimen was designated. McCulloch (1916) indicated that the description was based on two specimens (190-200 mm wide) and indicated that the smallest was figured, with the tail curved to the left. That drawing was subsequently modified, with shading added, but otherwise identical to the original drawing. McCulloch sent that drawing to Waite who published it in 1921, but the image was reversed with the tail curved to the right. In the Endeavour register the type is listed as E.3501, which is the largest specimen with the tail pointing to the right and 3500 and 3502-3505 listed as cotypes. It is possible that McCulloch deliberately reversed the image to make it more similar to the larger specimen with the tail curving to the right, or it was inadvertently reversed in printing. However, Whitley (1940) shows the same image as published by Waite, with the tail curved to the right and labels the drawing as the lectotype, with a disc width of 7.5 inches (= 190 mm). We have not found an earlier designation of the lectotype and here accept the original figured specimen as being designated the lectotype by Whitley. McCulloch also indicated that he had three additional specimens (113-133 mm wide) agreeing with the larger specimens, but there are a total of six specimens listed as types in the register, and it is assumed that the listing of three specimens was an error for four specimens.
