Species Upeneus asymmetricus Lachner, 1954
Asymmetric Goatfish, Asymmetrical Goatfish
- Upeneus asymmetricus Lachner, E.A. 1954. A revision of the goatfish genus Upeneus with descriptions of two new species. Proceedings of the United States National Museum 103(3330): 497-532 pls 13-14 [511, pl. 13(B)].
Type data:
Holotype USNM 154659, Pandanon Island, east of Cebu, Philippines.
Paratype(s) USNM 154660; USNM 154661.
Introduction
Following recent work on the genus Upeneus the presence of this species in Australian waters is unclear. Uiblein & Gledhill (2014) state that the records of U. asymmetricus in Gloerfelt-Tarp & Kailola (1984) and Sainsbury et al. (1985) from northern Australia are misidentifications of the later described U. australiae Kim & Nakaya 2002. Tentatively we retain the name here, but many, if not all records from Australia may be based on misidentified Upeneus australiae.
