Comment: BMNH 1981.5.22.1 considered to be syntypes and lectotype designated by Dawson (1979), but Roberts (1993) considered the species to have been described only from a figure left in Java (See: Dawson, C.E. 1979. Review of the polytypic doryrhamphine pipefish Oostethus brachyurus (Bleeker). Bulletin of Marine Science 29(4): 465–480 figs 1–4 [469] and Roberts, T.R. 1993. The freshwater fishes of Java, as observed by Kuhl and van Hasselt in 1820-23. Zoologische Verhandelingen (Leiden) 285: 1-94 [36]).
