Species Toxotes jaculatrix (Pallas, 1767)

Banded Archerfish, Northern Rifle-fish

Miscellaneous Literature Names

Introduction

There is some confusion over the use of the name Toxotes schlosseri. McCulloch (1929) lists the species as based on Gobius schlosseri Pallas, 1770, which is now regarded as Periophthalmodon schlosseri and from the original figure, it is clearly not a Toxotes. McCulloch (1929) also listed Scarus schlosseri Gmelin, 1789 as a synonym, indicating that it was based on Pallas, 1770: 41. However, Gmelin (1789) does not give any Pallas name to the species, but does reference Pallas Spic. Zool. 8, p. 41. The species on that page is Sparus insidiator (= Epibulus insidiator). As a result it is apparent that either Gmelin (1789) made a mistake in the reference or the species (i.e., Scarus schlosseri Gmelin, 1789) should be treated as a separate description, which is what is followed here. The confusion appears to date back to Günther (1860).
