Introduction
Stethojulis axillaris (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) was widely used as a senior synonym of Stethojulis bandanensis by many earlier authors (e.g. de Beaufort 1940), until Randall & Kay (1974) established that S. axillaris is restricted to Hawaii and is a junior synonym of S. balteata (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824). Parenti & Randall (2000) listed Stethojulis casturi Günther as a junior synonym of S. trilineata, but is retained following Randall (2000). Figure in Günther (1909) of syntype clearly indicates that the nominal species belongs here.
