Introduction
The species was treated as a junior synonym of Cephalopholis urodeta by Randall & Heemstra (1991), Heemstra & Randall (1993) and Randall (2005). However, Allen & Adrim (2003) separated the two species and recorded both from the Indian Ocean. We follow Allen & Adrim (2003), Allen et al. (2007) and Craig et al. (2011) in recognising the species as distinct. Craig et al. (2011) recorded Cephalopholis urodeta from Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Island, but did not record the related Cephalopholis nigripinnis from those localities. Tentatively we have included both species from those localities. Allen & Adrim (2003) recorded C. nigripinnis from Indonesia.
