Introduction

Craig et al. (2011) recorded this species from Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Island, but did not record the related Cephalopholis nigripinnis from those localities. Tentatively we have included both species from those localities.

Claremont (32º01'S) to Dampier Archipelago (20º28'S), Rowley Shoals (17º30'S) and Scott Reef (14º03'S), WA, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12º15'S), Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean, and Escape Reef (15º50'S) to Moreton Bay (27º24'S), QLD, also Portlock Reef (9°43'S, 144°48'E), Osprey Reef and Holmes Reef, Coral Sea, Middleton and Elizabeth Reefs Reserve; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
