Scolopsis Cuvier, C.G.L. 1815. Observations et researches critiques sur différentes Poissons de la Méditerranée, et à leur occasion, sur des Poissons des autres mers, plus ou moins liés avec eux; par M.G. Cuvier. [In a report by A.D. = A.G. Desmarest]. Bulletin de la Société Philomathique de Paris 1814: 80-92 [90] [the name is apparently from the Greek feminine noun opsis = sight, but has tranditionally been treated as masculine; the name appeared earlier with a type species that now belongs to a North American freshwater fish].

Stanford University Publications, University Series 27: 1-151 [103] (with no included species, we follow common usage here in relation to the type species as there is some uncertainty relating to inclusion of species within the genus).
