Introduction

Recent molecular work by Wong et al. 2004 recognised two distinct populations which suggested that Pseudomugil signifer may represent two species, a northern species from the Ross River, QLD north, and a southern species from the Don River, Ross south. We recognise here the two populations as distinct species. Considerable geographic variation occurs in both species (Allen et al. 2002). Previously Hadfield et al. (1979) recognised 14 separate populations, treating all as Pseudomugil signifer.
