Genus Pseudanthias Bleeker, 1871

Introduction

Katayama (1990) separated the Indo-Pacific Pseudanthias from the Atlantic and eastern Pacific Anthias. However, most workers continued to use Anthias for Indo-Pacific species until around 1990 (Randall et al.1990). Hobbs et al. (2014) recorded Pseudanthias pulcherrimus (Heemstra & Allen, 1986) from Cocos (Keeling) Islands, based on Allen & Smith-Vaniz (1994). However, we can find no record of the species in the latter publication. It is likely to occur there, but confirmation is needed. Gill et al (2021) suggested that the genus is not monophyletic.
