- Priacanthus Oken, L. 1817. V. Klasse Fische. Isis (Muenchen) 8(148): 1181-1183 [misprinted 1781-1783] [1182] [latinised form of 'Les Priacanthes' Cuvier, 1814 and 1816].
Type species:
Anthias macrophthalmus Bloch, 1792 (= Sciaena hamrur Forsskål, 1775) by subsequent designation, see Jordan, D.S. & Evermann, B.W. 1896. The fishes of North and middle America: a descriptive catalogue of the species of fish-like vertebrates found in the waters of North America, north of the Isthmus of Panama. Bulletin of the United States National Museum 47(1): 1-1240 [1237] (Anthias macrophthalmus has generally been considered the type, with Cuvier 1816 listing Anthias boops and Anthias macracanthus in a footnote under the vernacular name Priacanthes; however Oken 1817 lists only Anth. Boops, frequently capitalizing species names; we follow current usage here for stability but note that use of Article 70.3.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature may be required to validate the type designation; it is also possible that the type was selected in an early french dictionary).
