Introduction
We follow Jones (1985) in recognising Leiognathus hastatus Ogilby, 1912 as a synonym of Equulites leuciscus. However, Woodland et al. (2001: 2812) listed L. hastatus as a junior synonym of Leiognathus moretoniensis; this synonymy may have been based on the work of Whitley (1932: 107) who listed AM I.465 as the holotype of L. hastatus. The specimen AM I.465 was received from the Queensland Museum in 1886. Jones (1985) considered it not to be a type specimen and regarded QM I.878 as the holotype of L. hastatus.
