Introduction
Previously misidentified on the west coast as P. schwenkii. The distributions of the two species are believed not to overlap according to Koeda et al. (2014). Randall et al. (2014) suggested that P.tominagai is endemic to the Red Sea, but did not discuss identity of Australian material, although they implied that the Australian material might be P. schwenkii. Koeda et al. (2014) treated the species as related to, but separate from P. schwenkii from the Pacific. However the type locality of P. schwenkii is Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. Randall & Bineesh (2014) recorded P. schwenkii from India, but suggested that the species might be a composite of two or more species.Randall & Victor (2015) treated the western Indian Ocean form as a distinct species Pempheris connelli Randall & Victor, 2015, Pempheris hollemani Randall & Victor, 2015 and Pempheris ternay Randall & Victor. 2015, Tentatively we retain the name here for Western Australian material until the status of these various species is resolved. There are cases where western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean colour forms co-occur in Sumatra.
