Introduction

Members of the Pseudochromidae were treated by Paxton et al. (1989) and Gill (2004). The family Congrogadidae is now regarded as a subfamily of Pseudochromidae (Godkin & Winterbottom 1985; Mooi et al. 1990; Gill et al. 1991; Nelson 1994). The family includes a total of four subfamilies (Nelson 1994); representatives from three are found in Australian waters.

Gill (1999) provided a key which deals with many of the Australian species. Currently, the family contains 24 genera and 151 recognised species, with 14 genera and 37 species known from Australia.
