Introduction

The species is sometimes included in the Exocoetidae (see Dasilao & Sasaki 1998). Collette (1999, 2004) and Lovejoy et al. (2004) retained the species in the Hemiramphidae. Subsequent molecular work (Lewallen et al. 2011) supported placement in the Hemiramphidae.

Based on few Australian records, predicted from off Cape Arid (123°E) to off Shark Bay (25°S), WA, Cartier Reef, Timor Sea, and off Burleigh Heads, QLD (28°S) to Hobart, TAS (42°S); tropical, temperate, circumglobal.
