  Type species:

   Balistes hispidus longirostris Bloch & Schneider, 1801 by monotypy.

 

Introduction

Apparently the first usage of the generic name was in a species list by Bleeker (1864). Subsequent references give a different type species (O. longirostris), but the original type species Monacanthus chrysospilos is regarded as a junior synonym of Oxymonacanthus longirostris.
