On the validity of the Indo-Pacific cardinalfishes Apogon aureus (Lacépède) and A. fleurieu (Lacepède), with description of a related new species from the Red Sea. Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 103(1): 39–62 do not accept the neotype designation, which would make the species a junior synonym of Apogon aureus (now in Ostorhinchus; Eschmeyer, W.N. 1998. Catalog of Fishes. San Francisco : California Academy of Sciences pp. 3 vols 2905. argued convincingly that the neotype designation was valid and that the species treated here should be named as a new species; it is retained here in the interests of stability).
