Introduction
The species is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. In the ACT the species is listed as Endangered under the Nature Conservation Act 1980. In New South Wales the species is listed as Endangered under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 and in Victoria listed as Endangered under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988. In 1996 the IUCN listed the species as Data Deficient.
Records of this species from the easterly flowing Hawkesbury-Nepean River system in NSW were recently recognised as a separate species, see Hoser (2020).

Extra Distribution Information
Scattered localities in the Murray-Darling system and westward flowing tributaries on the Great Dividing Range, the range appears to be decreasing with a single record from SA uncertain, replaced in the Hawkesbury-Nepean river system by M. hoserae; temperate.
