Type data:
Holotype AM E.2878 (the specimen was designated as a lectotype by Roberts, C.D. 1989. A revision of New Zealand and Australian orange perches (Teleostei; Serranidae) previously referred to Lepidoperca pulchella (Waite) with description of a new species of Lepidoperca from New Zealand. Journal of Natural History 23(3): 557-589 [567]; however, Whitley stated that AM E.2878 was the holotype. Incorrectly listed as north-east of Cape Moreton.), Trawl Haul 334, south-east of Cape Moreton, Queensland [27°05′S, 153°32′E].
