Introduction
Previous records of the species largely have been based on hemiclones, resulting from hybridization between this and other species (H. acropinna and H. bucephala). The species was undoubtedly widespread at one time, but is now known from only one genetically distinct and self breeding population. The genetic identity of material collected in the 1800's is currently unknown.
The species was listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN in 2019
