Type species:
Atherina panatela Jordan & Richardson, 1908 (type species originally as Atherina temminckii Bleeker, 1853, but was based on misidentification of Atherina panatela Jordan & Richardson, 1908; see Sasaki & Kimura 2014 and Paxton et al. 1989; however, no author has yet cited Article 70.3 of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature as a basis for permanently selecting Atherina panatela as the type species;) by original designation.
