Type data:
Holotype USNM 78228, between Gillolo and Makyan Island, Philippines [0°15´00"N, 127°24´35"E].
Paratype(s) USNM 64 specimens; CAS(SU) 25463 8 specimens.

Introduction
Previoosly the species was treated as having two subspecies, Hymenocephalus striatissimus striatissimus found from the Philippines to Japan and H. striatissimus aeger from Australia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Schwarzhans (2014) separated the two as distinct specis.
