Tribe Humphreyscandonini Karanovic, 2005

Introduction

The tribe is endemic to the ground waters of the Pilbara region. It comprises the following genera (number of species in brackets):

3. Humphreyscandona Karanovic & Marmonier, 2003 (10);
4. Meridiescandona Karanovic, 2003 (3);

6. Origocandona Karanovic, 2003 (3);
7. Pierrecandona Karanovic, 2007 (1);
8. Pilbaracandona Karanovic & Marmonier, 2003 (6).

 

Diagnosis

Carapace shape variable (loaf-like, triangular, trapezoidal, subreniform), ornamentation (consisting of pits and/or ridges) possible, hinge adont. Inner calcified lamellas wide on both ends. Central muscle scars conforming to general pattern of Candoninae. Antennula 5- or 6-segmented. Terminal claw of mandibular palp broadly fused with the segment, and externally accompanied by one clearly weaker claw. Second thoracopod without basal seta on protopod. Terminal segment on third thoracopod with two short and one long seta. Caudal ramus completely developed or with reduced posterior furcal claw. Genital field in female without extensions. Lobe “b” on hemipenis with characteristic, sharply pointed chitinous part, dorsally projected. Zenker's organ well developed, and with seven whorls of spines.
