Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
- Lourie, S.A., Pollom, R.A. & Foster, S.J. 2016. A global revision of the Seahorses Hippocampus Rafinesque 1810 (Actinopterygii: Syngnathiformes): Taxonomy and biogeography with recommendations for further research. Zootaxa 4146(1): 1–66 [31]
Introduction
Kuiter (2001) considered H. taeniopterus to be the correct name for the species previously called H. kuda in Australia and exlcluded H. kuda from Australia. Allen & Erdmann (2012) also recognised both as distinct species, sympatric over part of their range. Lourie et al. (2016) treated Hippocampus taeniopterus as a junior synonym of H. kuda, but gave little reason for the synonymy other than reference to previous works. Lourie et al (2016). suggested that H. kuda might be a clade of several forms, but indicated that they could not separate any into distinct species. Tentatively we follow that work with considerable reservation, and note that further work is needed on Australia material of this complex. We do not recognise H. tristis as a synonym as did Lourie et al. (2016).
