Introduction

There is a major dispute over the identity of this species from Australia. Kuiter (2001) argued that Hippocampus kelloggi was restricted to Japan, with records from eastern Australia in Lourie et al (1999) based on H. tristis. Lourie et al. (2006) argued that some records of Hippocampus alatus and H. tristis were based on H. kelloggi. However their distribution map does not include New South Wales from where Kuiter (2001) reported the H. tristis. We accept H. kelloggi here based on genetic evidence presented by Harasti (2017), who reported specimens from Sydney. The map in Lourie et al. (2016) showed H. kelloggi extending off the east coast of Queensland, but only mention a paratype of H. alatus, which was from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Lourie et al. (2016) regarded H. tristis as a junior synonym of H. kuda adding to the confusion. We are unable to resolve the dispute and include both species here (H. tristis and H. kelloggi), but recognise that only one species may be involved and further studies may be required to determine the correct identification of Australian material.
