Miscellaneous Literature Names
- Hippocampus trimaculatus Leach, 1814 [Kuiter (2009) considers Hippocampus trimaculatus Leach in Leach & Nodder 1814, to be a complex of species that includes H. kampylotrachelos Bleeker 1854].
Introduction
Lourie et al. (2016) presented a confused discussion relating to Australian material. They treated this species as a synonym of H. trimaculatus and designated a lectotype for that species from China. They considered that the specimen from Ashmore Reef used by Kuiter (2001) for this species is also H. trimaculatus (NTM S.12060-001), but then excluded H. trimaculatus from Australia. They also indicated that specimens from west of Wallace's Line differed in DNA sequences of 2.9% from specimens to the east. However, they state elsewhere in the publication that they recognised species as distinct when there was a 2% or more difference. Because the type locality for H. kampylotrachelos is Sumatra, west of Wallace's Line, we retain the name here, but recognise that the species might be a synonym of H. mannulus Cantor, 1849 from Malaysia.
