Species Gobiodon spilophthalmus Fowler, 1944

Whitelined Coralgoby, White-lined Coral Goby, Whitelined Coral Goby

Introduction

The species is the juvenile phase of a species that turns black as adults. Several names are available and we use the name here for the species which most closely matches the original material. Other names available include Gobiodon heterospilos Bleeker, 1856, Gobiodon albofasciatus Sawada & Arai, 1972 and Gobiodon winterbottomi Suzuki, Yanao & Senou, 2012. Some are likely to be distinct species. Many are found in the coral Echinopora, but this species is on different corals. Some workers (Shibukawa et al. 2013) treated Gobiodon spilophthalmus as a junior synonym of Gobiodon heterospilus. It is possible that G. spilophthalmus is a synonym of the species treated here as G. ceramensis.
