Holotype BMNH 1844.9.11.29 (Richardson mentions only one specimen, but 2 are lodged in BMNH 1844.9.11.29; one is a specimen of Bathygobius, which probably came from northern Australia and is probably not part of the original type series), Bay of Islands, New Zealand. - Gobius lateralis obliquus McCulloch, A.R. & Ogilby, J.D. 1919. Confined to eastern Australia from Lizard Island, QLD (14°40'S) to Merimbula, NSW (36°53'S), some records based on misidentified F. lateralis, northern records also possibly based on undescribed species; temperate, south-west Pacific (New Zealand).
