Introduction

Paxton (1975) correctly identified Choeroichthys suillus malus Whitley, 1954 as a synonym of Doryrhamphus negrosensis Herre, 1934. In revising the genus Dawson (1981) treated D. negrosensis as including two subspecies, D. negrosensis negrosensis Herre, 1934 (Japan to Papua New Guinea) and D. negrosensis malus (Whitley 1954) (Queensland). Kuiter (2000, 2009) raised D. negrosensis malus to species level, treating material collected from Queensland as D. malus (Whitley 1954). We follow Dawson (1981, 1985) in treating D. negrosensis malus as a subspecies until further work is undertaken to determine whether the differences between the two warrant recognition as separate species, and the identity of material collected from Western Australia.
