Introduction
Kuiter (2000, 2009) considered Doryrhamphus excisus to be a complex of three species: D. excisus (restricted to the western Indian Ocean and Red Sea), D. melanopleura, (from the western central Pacific), and an undescribed species from Queensland and the Coral Sea. Until the genus Doryrhamphus is examined in more detail, we follow Allen & Erdmann (2012) and other authors in using the name D. melanopleura for Australian material.
