Introduction
There has been some confusion over the name Dischistodus notophthalmus. That name was used in earlier literature for the species now referred to as Dischistodus melanotus. The nominal species Pomacentrus notophthalmus is regarded here as a junior synonym of Dischistodus prosopotaenia based on examination of the holotype by G. Allen. Some references (Randall et al 1990) incorrectly suggested that Pomacentrus notophthalmus was a junior synonym of Dischistodus melanotus.
