Species Deribia coccinea (Guérin-Méneville, 1829)

Compiler and date details

20 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

The identity of this species is unknown at present. Examination of the ancient literature may cast some light on the species which was one of the earliest described Australian derbids, predated only by Lydda elongata (Fabricius, 1781). It is possible that it has subsequently been redescribed. One of the commonest derbids in eastern Australia is Saccharodite chrysonoe (Kirkaldy, 1906) which appears quite red in life although fading as dried specimens and it is possible that the two names apply to the same species. Its presence in New Zealand has been queried by M.C. Larivière, New Zealand Arthropod Collection, Auckland.

Distribution

Recorded from "Australia".

Ecological Descriptors

Adult: phloem feeder.

Extra Ecological Information

Nymph may be fungal feeder

Diagnosis

No description has been found for this species. It is presumably reddish in colour, based on the species name.
