Subfamily Otiocerinae Muir, 1913

Compiler and date details

13 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Muir (1913) defined four groups within the Derbidae based on different genera and this included a group based on Otiocerus but he did not formally name it as Otiocerinae until 1917. He regarded the group as being monophyletic and noted that it included some of the "most fantastically shaped insects of the family". Emeljanov (1995) created a number of new tribes within this subfamily but none of these is represented in Australia. Four tribes are represented in the Australian fauna, and the fauna is probably far richer than is currently recognised.
